Celebrating, ‘Right to Health’ on World Health Day

Mafeteng- The 7th of April every year is celebrated as World Health Day. Health is a fundamental right of every human being regardless of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or social status. In Lesotho, the Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organisation(WHO) hosted a weeklong event to mark this day beginning with a health walk in Mafeteng District led by the Minister of Health, Mr. Selibe Mochoboroane, a high school poetry competition on the theme amongst others.

Reflecting on the theme, “My Health, my right”, Minister Mochoboroane charged everyone to make their right to health a responsibility.

This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

WHO Country Representative, Dr. Richard Banda stated that everyone should have access to the health services they need when and where they need them, without facing financial hardship.

“We will continue to work with the government to strengthen the health system. We will continue to collaborate across sectors to achieve universal health coverage for everyone, everywhere – because it is part of our human rights”, says Dr. Banda.

Dedicated to the well-being of all people, the World Health Organization leads and champions global efforts to give everyone, everywhere an equal chance to live a healthy life. Enjoying good health means not merely living without disease but also achieving a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
